Vadakku Thiruveedhi Pillai

Nampillai's disciple, who wrote down his acharya's lectures night after night and so gave us the Eedu.

Vadakku Thiruveedhi Pillai, whose name was Sri Krishnapadar, lived on the north street — the Vadakku Thiruveedhi — of Srirangam, and is known by it. He was a devoted disciple of Nampillai and never missed his acharya's lectures on Thiruvaymozhi.

Each night, after the day's lecture, he went home and wrote down everything he had heard, carefully and faithfully. When the whole of Thiruvaymozhi was done, he placed the manuscript before Nampillai. According to tradition, Nampillai was at first unhappy that it had been written without his leave, but, seeing how faithful it was, he accepted it. This record is the Eedu Muppathaarayirappadi, the Thirty-Six Thousand Padi. Nampillai entrusted it to Eeyunni Madhava Perumal, and it was handed down in that family until, in time, it reached Manavala Mamunigal.

The tradition also remembers that it was by Nampillai's blessing that a son was born to him. He named the child Pillai Lokacharya, after his own acharya, who was called Lokacharyar. A second son, Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Nayanar, later wrote the Acharya Hrudayam. So, through this one disciple, both the Eedu and the next acharya came to the sampradaya.
