Saranagathi: The Final Boat

The Path of Absolute Surrender in the Sri Vaishnava Tradition

The soul is drowning in the ocean of samsara, and no stroke of its own will bring it to shore. Saranagathi is about the boat the Lord Himself sends. It begins with akinchanya and ananya-gatitvam, the poverty and the having-no-other-refuge that qualify us, and walks through the six limbs of prapatti, the purushakaram of Sri Mahalakshmi, and the three sacred secrets: the Ashtakshari, the Dvaya and the Charama Sloka.

It then turns to the acharya, the boatman who brings us to the boat, and to the life of a prapanna after surrender: kainkaryam, fearlessness, conduct in the world, and the final journey by the path of light. It closes with the great surrenderers, Vibhishana, Draupadi, Gajendra and the Alwars. Written as one tired swimmer telling another where the boat is.
